The Context of our Work
Inspiration and design
Our artists all live locally in and around the famous Chianti area in the heart of Tuscany. Their work is strongly influenced by the direct contact with the local flora and fauna. Our workshop in Chianti is immersed in the olive groves and vineyards for which Tuscany is famous. There are so many changes around us, all throughout the year. In the spring especially, there are orchids growing wild and white and yellow daisies, wild herbs like fennel and thyme and poppies and blue linseed flowers. It is from these natural sources of inspiration that the pottery takes on its shape and colour. Fruit and vegetables, flowers and wild animals are recurring themes.
Some of our customers ask us to do new things for them, so we try them out and sometimes this results in a new design. This is why some of our patterns are named after our customers, like Becky and Uva Monique.
Our designs change a little every time they are painted. Balance between colours, shades and tonalities must be achieved. The form of a plate, the curve of a jug or the space on a small saucer all have to be considered when creating and applying a pattern.
The individual way that each artist mixes and makes up the colours that are needed to paint our designs is unique to them and this comes through strongly when you see the finished piece.
